Read Beneath a Tree

International Read Beneath a Tree Day is the third Saturday in June. This year it falls on June 17th.

History

When I was a child I wanted to grow up to be First Lady. Raised in a neighborhood where full equality between the sexes was taken for granted, I thought it sounded like a better job than President. She got to talk to the world about the things most important to her. As First Lady I was going to start Read Beneath a Tree Day, combining my twin passions of literacy and preserving natural spaces.

Three years ago I realized that the internet allows anyone to create a day. Just ask the guys who came up with International Talk Like a Pirate Day. So I created a Facebook event and sent it out to my entire (less than 100 people) friends list. Things snowballed and over 2,000 people from around the world said they would attend. Dozens uploaded pictures of themselves reading beneath a tree to the event page that day.

Today

This year marks the return of Read Beneath a Tree Day. I am promoting it with #readbeneathatree and hope you participate. Upload photos and book recommendations to share with friends worldwide.
